MLP: The Future of City Lighting

Master Lighting Plan (MLP) is a long term guide for how a city, district, or development should be lit. It sets the standards, identity, and technology for all future lighting decisions like a lighting roadmap for the next 10–20 years. It answers the essential questions:

Where do we light?
Why do we light it?
How do we light it?
To what standards?
With what identity?
With what technology & controls?

The structure is the international standard used in cities like Lyon, London, Riyadh, Dubai, Singapore, and customized for high-end lighting practices. The implementation is tailored to the unique characteristics of each project. By studying the site, analyzing the movement and needs of people, and applying the best global practices, we create lighting that elevates urban living while saving energy.

The Vision when we define the story the city should tell at night aligning with its identity, culture, and ambitions, ensuring light supports both function and emotion.

The Analysis comes before designing anything, we study the site in depth. We identify dark zones, safety concerns, inefficient lighting, and visual clutter.

The Zoning Areas are divided based on use and character, such as pedestrian paths and landmarks. Each zone receives specific lighting recommendations, including brightness levels, color temperature, and fixture types.

Strategy & Concept define how each zone should look and feel at night. The concept is then visualized through lighting maps, diagrams, and references, allowing stakeholders to clearly understand the intended nighttime experience.

Sustainability is embedded in reducing light pollution, glare, and unnecessary energy consumption. By using efficient technologies and responsible lighting levels, the plan supports environmental goals.

Implementation & Guidelines are to ensure consistency across phases and stakeholders, allowing the lighting vision to be maintained as the city grows and evolves.

At Aluzo, we believe in this approach, essential for modern cities, ensuring efficient operation, flexibility, and long-term performance, crucial for smart cities like Riyadh & Doha.

Our MLP Methodology Includes:

  • Vision: Crafting experiences through light
  • Analysis: Deeply understanding site needs
  • Zoning: Defining lighting for specific spaces
  • Strategy & Concept: Roadmap of the look and feel
  • Sustainability: Smart, energy-saving lighting systems
  • Implementation & Guidelines: A clear rulebook for consistency across all lighting decisions
